Mera Violet Haddock: She had not been to the throne room much lately.

Not at all, today.

There were more important matters to attend to, ones that required Mera to stay in the bedroom, wringing her hands restlessly.

Traveling out in the cold for so long… of course… I was afraid this would happen.

Signy was ill. Not just slightly, either; the infant girl was clearly struggling, and even though the sickness had appeared to contract only a few days ago, every day she worsened significantly. Mera had of course approached the doctors, healers, and witches of the camp with her concerns, yet none of them had done a bit of good. The best that could be done, so far as they and Mera could see, was attending to the child religiously and seeing to her symptoms.

So Mera was doing that.

Running a kingdom was never my deal anyway. I’ll do it, sure, but there are other things I’ll put first in my life. If the rebellion falls apart in only a few days of my absence, well then, that’s Gareth’s fault.

She leaned in to the child she held swaddled in her hands, wishing Signy would quit coughing.

I can’t lose her. She hasn’t even spoken her first word…
